An Introduction to Cosmetic Herbs

Herbs have been used for Cosmetic purposes for thousands of years. The ancient Egyptians valued cosmetics so highly that they were buried with them, so they could adorn themselves in the afterlife. When the tomb of Tutankhamun was opened perfumes some 3000 years old could be detected. The Egyptians were the forerunners in using a variety of cosmetic preparations, such as incense-based deodorants, cleansing creams of oil and lime and hair tonics using juniper berries.
The art of perfumery was studied by the ancient Greeks, who passed their love of fragrance to the Romans. Bathing was an important social event in Roman times, and they developed various types of perfume both in liquid and solid form. The spread of the Roman Empire meant that many of their behaviours influenced life-styles across Europe.
It was not until the Middle Ages, when the Arabs using distillation were able to produce Essential Oils. A concentrated form of plant oils, that can be used in a myriad of ways to perfume creams, baths and skin preparations. Body oils were as popular then as they are today.
There are numerous herbal preparations that you can make yourself to cleanse, tone and moisturise your skin, rinses and tonics for the hair and bath oils to soak and soothe the soul.

NEVER USE ESSENTIAL OILS DIRECTLY ON THE SKIN AND ALWAYS PATCH TEST ANY NEW TREATMENT PRIOR TO USE
