Herbs for bath and spa

Herbs for bath and spa

Creating your own herbal spa at home, takes a little planning to ensure that you have the right equipment and herbal ingredients on hand, to allow you to fully benefit from the herbal ??.

If you want to turn your bathroom into an herbal heaven, then there are a few essentials you will need:

Large clean cotton towel – the soggy towel left lying on the floor won’t do!

Aromatherapy Candle – to create a relaxing or invigorating environment

Exfoliator of choice – pumice stone, loofah, body brush, sisal mitt

Bath Pillow – to really enjoy those relaxing herb soaks

DO NOT DISTURB SIGN – there is nothing worse than having to open the door covered in bits of lavender! Also turn the phone OFF!

Now the question is what type of spa experience do you want? A soothing ,relaxing calming cloud nine ? Or a cleansing, stimulating, refreshing  delight? The choice is yours, but you need very different herbs for each.

RELAXING RAPTURE

Even if you are having a relaxing spa , it is always a good idea to have a body scrub first, that you shower off before getting in the bath to soak.

Lavender & Sea Salt Body Scrub – sufficient for 1 treatment

Mix 2tbsp of Sea Salt and 1 tsp of dried lavender flowers with , 2 tbsp of almond oil and a few drops of Lavender essential oil

Apply everywhere except the face, in a circular motion, use a loofah or sisal mitt if you want a more thorough cleansing. Rinse or shower off

Now your skin is clean and ready to absorb the beneficial herbs in your spa bath. There are a number of ways you can use herbs in the bath:

Herbal Bath Bags – simply fill a square of muslin with your chosen herbs and a few drops of matching essential oils, tie together and either hang from the tap or place in the water

Herbal Bath Infusions – make an infusion of your chosen herbs and pour into the bath

Herbal Bath Oils – using your chosen combination of essential oils , place into a carrier either almond oil or even a tablespoon of milk and pour into the bath. NEVER place essential oils directly into the water, as they can cause an irritation to the skin

SOOTHING HERB SELECTION

Soothing and relaxing – Lavender, Valerian, Chamomile, Lemon Balm

Sensual soak – Lavender and rose petals

Warming – Ginger

Soothe irritated skin – oatmeal, with lavender and geranium essential oils

FACE MASK

Why not make a face mask to indulge your face whilst you are soaking, using ingredients from the kitchen:

Grind 2tbsp of oatmeal to a fine powder add 3 large ripe mashed strawberries and mix together with a tsp of cream, to a fine paste. Apply paste to cleansed skin and leave for 10 mins. Remove by adding water and gently wiping off. Best do this for the last 10 mins of your soak, rather than lie in a bath of strawberry bits!

Following your soak, relax wrapped in your towel until you are dry. While your skin is still warm you can always fit in a mini pedicure to spoil those toes. Now you need to nourish the skin with some herbal balms or lotions:

SOOTHING SKIN OIL

Combine 2 tablespoons of each of the following oils – Macerated Lavender Oil ( see About Herbs page), Macerated Calendula Oil, Macerated Chamomile Oil, Sweet Almond Oil

With

5 drops lavender essential oil

5 drops geranium essential oil
