Herbs for feet and hands

Herbs for feet and hands

Our hands and feet are perhaps the hardest working parts of our body, whether we are standing on them all day or we have our hands plunged into water washing or cooking, or gardening. A little time spent on ensuring both hands and feet are in tip top condition will be repaid many times over in future years.

Hands benefit from a gentle exfoliation, before applying moisturiser. Simply pour a tablespoon of olive oil into your hands with some caster sugar or sea salt and gently rub into the hands – if you have any cuts, the sugar is kinder than the salt! Not only will ingrained grime be removed as well as any dead skin cells, but the skin will be left feeling lovely and soft.

For a deeper moisturiser, make a balm from 75ml of macerated calendula oil, 10 g of beeswax melted together in a double boiler, then add 10 drops each of bergamot, geranium and lavender essential oils. Pour into a wide necked jar and use daily. Balm will keep up to 3 months

Our feet are often neglected, a case of out of sight , out of mind, it is not until we bring them out in the summer we realise the extent of that neglect. In order to get them in shape for the beach a long soothing herbal soak is a must.

Combine 50g of Bicarbonate of Soda, with 25g each of dried lavender and lemon balm, add 10 drops each of lavender and bergamot essential oil. Put into a wide necked jar and use approximately 1 tablespoon in a bowl of warm water to soak and soften feet. Additional Bicarb can be used for further exfoliation, followed by a rich moisturising foot balm.

Place 75ml of Calendula macerated oil in a double boiler ( a bowl over a pan of water will suffice) add and melt 10g of beeswax. Add 25 drops of peppermint essential oil. The antiseptic, antimicrobial and astringent properties of peppermint, make it particularily good at keeping feet fresh.
